What it is

The CFT 75 is a recirculating chiller manufactured by Neslab. The CFT 75 is a single-phase air-cooled chiller. The CFT 75 refrigeration system uses R134a refrigerant. The CFT 75 is a CFC-free chiller.[3][2][1]

The CFT 75 succeeded the HX series of Neslab chillers. The CFT 75 is not available in a water-cooled configuration and supports a limited set of options.[1]

How it works

The CFT 75 uses an air-cooled refrigeration system. Air is drawn in the front of the unit and discharged through the rear and sides. The CFT 75 must be positioned so the intake and discharge airflow is not impeded. Inadequate ventilation reduces cooling capacity and can lead to compressor failure in extreme cases. The CFT 75 retains its full rated capacity in ambient temperatures up to approximately +38 °C.[2]

The plumbing connections are located on the rear of the unit and are labelled SUPPLY and RETURN or OUTLET and INLET. The supply and return connections are ½ inch NPT fittings. The SUPPLY fitting connects to the inlet of the instrument being cooled. The RETURN fitting connects to the outlet of the instrument being cooled. Tap water is the recommended cooling fluid for operation. The reservoir is filled through a square-nut plug located under a thumbscrewed access panel.[2]

A Main Power Switch starts and stops the unit. A Power Switch LED illuminates to indicate that the system is operating. A Cool LED indicates the status of the refrigeration system. The Cool LED illuminates while the refrigeration system removes heat from the cooling fluid. The Cool LED extinguishes as the operating temperature approaches the setpoint. After the unit is shut off, approximately five minutes should pass before restarting to allow the refrigeration pressures to equalize.[2]

Applications

The CFT 75 is a single-phase air-cooled chiller used across many industries.[1]

Why won't it start?

Documented failure modes, common issues, and field considerations.

  • Inadequate ventilation reduces cooling capacity.
  • Dust or debris on condenser fins can cause loss of cooling capacity.
  • If refrigeration pressures are not allowed to equalize after shutdown, the compressor can short-cycle and no cooling will occur.
