What it is

The Thermo Fisher Scientific FEI Quanta 200 is a scanning electron microscope that supports multiple electron detection modes. The Quanta 200 includes a large-field detector for secondary electrons, a gaseous secondary electron detector, a gaseous backscattered electron detector secondary electron mode, and a gaseous backscattered electron detector back-scattered electron mode. The instrument is equipped with a Peltier stage capable of temperature control from minus 25 degrees Celsius to plus 55 degrees Celsius and two hot stages with maximum temperatures of 1000 degrees Celsius and 1500 degrees Celsius. The Quanta 200 also incorporates an Oxford INCA-350 X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy detector for elemental analysis. The system runs on two personal computers with hard disk drives.[1][2]

How it works

General reference — not yet source-verified

A scanning electron microscope operates by generating a focused electron beam from an electron gun, which is then scanned in a raster pattern across the sample surface by electromagnetic lenses. As the beam strikes the sample, various signals are emitted, including secondary electrons, backscattered electrons, and characteristic X-rays. Detectors collect these signals to form images or perform compositional analysis. The vacuum environment inside the chamber minimizes beam scattering by gas molecules.

Applications

General reference — not yet source-verified

Scanning electron microscopes are applied across semiconductor, materials science, and nanotechnology fields. For semiconductor applications, they are used for critical dimension measurement, defect characterization, contamination analysis, and cross-section imaging of device structures. The elemental analysis capability provided by energy-dispersive spectroscopy extends the tool's use to material composition verification and failure analysis. Temperature-controlled stages allow study of thermally induced phenomena such as phase changes or reactions.
